Sergei N. Lebedev. Soviet citizen, was born at Sevastopol, 7 August 1934. Graduate and post-graduate legal education was received in Moscow. In 1961 school year stayed at the University of Michigan Law School under an exchange programme. In 1963 was awarded the degree of Candidate of legal sciences and since then has been engaged in teaching at the Moscow Institute of International Relations where, at present, he is the head of the private international and civil law department. President of the Maritime Arbitration Commission (1972) and member of the Foreign Trade Arbitration Commission at the USSR Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Vice-Chairman of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration.

Participated in various legal projects under the auspices of the Council of Mutual Economic Assistance, including preparation of the Moscow Convention on Arbitration. 1972, and the CMEA Uniform Set of Arbitration Rules. 1974. Since 1971 has been attending. as an alternate Soviet representative, the annual sessions of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law and meetings of several working groups of the Commission to deal, inter alia, with the preparation of draft conventions on international sale and sea carriage, and of the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules (1976). A member of the USSR delegation to United Nations Conferences: on Prescription (Limitation) in the International Sale of Goods (New York, 1974); on the Carriage of Goods by Sea (Hamburg, 1978) and on the International Sale of Goods (Vienna, 1980).
